HENRY GOODWIN of Buckinghamshire, England

1. HENRY GOODWIN of Buckinghamshire, England. Wife's name unknown. One son, Robert Goodwin.

2. ROBERT HENRY GOODWIN born circa 1555. Married June, daughter of Collin of Herralt, Flanders. Only issue was Peter Goodwin.

3. PETER GOODWIN of Tower Street, London, England was born about 1585. A salt merchant and shipbuilder with a Coat of Arms in Heralds College, London circa 1633. Married Sarah Hillard, daughter of John Hillard, merchant of London. Of this marriage were eight children, Gertrude, Susannah, Elizabeth, Sarah, John, Matthew, Peter and James. Died 1661. Son James emigrated to America.

4. JAMES GOODWIN, born about 1625 in London, England and emigrated to Virginia as a young man. He died in York County, ( now Westmoreland County) Virginia in 1678, his estate being recorded January 1679. He was a Justice with the title of Major in the militia from 1657 to 1662 and in 1658 he represented York County in the House of Burgesses making his descendants eligible for membership in the Society of Colonial Wars.
He returned to England in 1661 and swore to his father's Will in London on December 1661, returning to Virginia in 1662. He was a plantation owner and grew mostly tobacco and corn. He was twice married. His first wife is Rachael Porter by whom he had seven children. Rachel Porter Goodwin's tombstone is still standing at Back Creek, York County, Virginia in what is now know as the town of Dandy at the end of Goodwin Neck and across the water from Goodwin Island, now owned by the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia. The inscription on her tombstone says she was born in 1630 and died May 23, 1666, leaving eight sons and two daughters.
Off the mouth of Back Creek is an island still known as Goodwin's Island which Samuel Chew received as a grant from the King of England and deeded to James Goodwin, who owned approximately two thousand acres.
James Goodwin's second wife was Elizabeth Parry. Their seven children were Robert, Job, Peter, Matthew, Martin, Susannah, and Elizabeth. His first wife, Rachel, was the daughter of John Porter of Norwich County, England and she may have married James Goodwin while in England. Major James Goodwin was granted 1,000 acres on the south side of the Potomac River on November 15, 1657. The records also show other grants made to the sons of James Goodwin and his grandchildren, which would indicate that the Goodwins of Virginia were large landowners. It seems to be the popular belief that Virginia was settled by the emigrants who arrived with Captain John Smith at Jamestown in 1607. However, almost all of them were killed by Indians, exposure and disease. The real settlement of Virginia occurred during the English Civil War from 1640 to 1660. The majority of these settlers were merchants and shipping people from the cities who were interested in securing homes. From this class came James Goodwin, descendant of merchants and shipbuilders.
James Goodwin came to Virginia in 1650, paying the way of eight others for which he was granted 400 acres in Westmoreland County ( upper Chesapeake Bay ). Samuel Chew, living in Ann Arundel County, Maryland, assigned the property, except some land in the Wormley area given to the first York Parish Church, to James Goodwin in 1660. James Goodwin became a magistrate in York County and a Speaker in the House of Burgesses and a major in the militia. The story is that he married a sickly and the last of the maidens brought to the colony to be taken as wives.
The Goodwin homestead was a two-story imposing structure facing Goodwin Island on the Thorofare in what is now know as Dandy. People still remember the house that was torn down shortly after 1900. Goodwin and his wife Rachel raised five sons and two daughters before she died on May 23, 1666 at age 36. James Goodwin then married an Elizabeth who evidently inherited Goodwin's 1200 acres. The rent rolls of England listed her in York in 1704 with Peter Goodwin owning 400 acres in York. Rachel's tombstone was broken up when a roadway was built through the Goodwin burial plot in 1945 in connection with the construction of the Pan American Refining Corporation processing plant ( today's AMOCO ).
Peter Goodwin became heir to the property in 1731, and in 1823 his son, by deed of gift, divided the property among his six children, among them Harold Goodwin.

5. PETER GOODWIN was born about 1656 and married Rebecca Tiplady, daughter of Captain John Tiplady, Justice of the Peace of York County, Virginia. Descendants eligible for membership in the Society of Colonial Wars. He was a son of John and Ruth Tiplady. By occupation, Peter Goodwin was a planter. He resided in York County. His will was proved in York County on November 20, 1731, which would indicate that he moved back to his first home before he died or he may have had other plantations in other counties which he visited from time to time and his legal residence may have been York County, Virginia.
Peter and Rebecca Tiplady Goodwin had six children, John, Elizabeth, Peter, James, Rachael, and Anna. Peter Goodwin died in 1751.

6. JAMES GOODWIN, born in York County, Virginia in 1715 and died November 8, 1757 at the age of thirty-three. His first wife was Diana Chism, born October 18, 1715, daughter of John and Eliann Chism. Diana died November 30, 1735. James Goodwin's second wife was Elizabeth Chapman Chism. James Goodwin was the father of one child by his first wife, John Goodwin, born November 17, 1735 and seven children of his second marriage; Peter, Robert, James, Diana, Elizabeth, and Rachael.

He served in the Revolutionary War in which he received a wound. Descendants are eligible for membership in the Sons or Daughters of the American Revolution.
His children through Dr. Tulloch trace back to Lady Jane Grant and claim to be heirs to her millions. His daughter Mary, married Joseph Graves and after her death here husband and children moved to Fayette County, Virginia which latter became Fayette County, Kentucky. The descendants of Robert Goodwin's other children reside in Virginia, principally in Louisa and Spottsylvania Counties to this day.
